Rooster Background

Summer Day Last Year on the Farm 10:15 am........ dibs anyone?
I bet my workshop friends thought they'd see a "chicken Clinic", here, right?...haha...they know what I mean by that! At the recent workshop in Shreveport, I used this little study to paint a bigger one as a demo, showing the class how to use your studies as reference for larger works...the big one is nice, and I will post it tomorrow...it is available now...

But, during my "24 in 24", as I painted this I heard the neighbor's roosters crowing and crowing back in the distant "background" over my left shoulder...probably sad for the doves getting shot at :)

I remember hanging clothes on the line here when I first arrived nearly 30 years ago, and hearing the roosters nearby. Today's painting was full of memories!....

We have been loading more images almost every day on the web site. The entire show or 365 paintings of 'Last Year on the Farm" will be up pretty soon. Right now we are preparing maps, so you will find us on "show day".Please browse and place your dibs on your favorite paintings. No obligation to "dibs", but I want you to be able to own one of these if you want to, and my kids get first pick....if you like one they have chosen, you can get another one if you have dibs on it....my kids are dragging their feet to pick theirs...guess they are waiting to see them all at once :)
The frames are on the way, so I will firm up pricces when I get them. After I announce the price, I will start contacting you who have dibs to let you have the first option to buy it ...this will be in about 2 weeks.THANKS FOR JOINING ME IN MY LAST YEAR ON THE FARM!

Day 2 8:30 am

"Summer Day Last Year...8:30 am Day 2".......available for dibs

This is the 23rd of 24 in my "Summer Day Last Year....24 Paintings in 24 Hours" .

Tomorrow I will post the 24th painting, which happens to be the FIRST FARM PAINTING SOLD.

This week I will tell you how to finalize your "dibs" if you have any, and to let you, my "blog friends" have the first shot at one of these little gems. It has been my great honor to hear from so many of you about this project so near to my heart.

My own special brand of "plein air painting" includes painting for LONG periods of time...it means REALLY SEEING the day, and capturing the changing light. I like to teach this in a workshop I do every month in Rockport.

The next one will be in early November...the weather is GREAT there that time of year, and there are great things to paint! Please join us if you can!

I just finished a "Studio Workshop" in Shreveport, LA...Thanks to Barbara R., who made it all possible....you have no idea how tough it is to plan a workshop and keep everyone happy....especially when you're working with artists!!! hahaha

Long Shadows - Shorter Days

"Last Year on the Farm 02-13-2006"......6 x 8 oil.....available for "dibs"
I said something like this, yesterday..."It is hard to part with your own paintings sometimes. Especially when each one I paint on location carries more memories with it than just the application of paint! "
I know I will have a hard time parting with 365 farm paintings, but so many of you have walked with me in this and I feel like y'all are "on the farm" with me at times. It will bring great pleasure to send you home with a little bit of the farm in your hand, if you see one you'd like to buy...so let me know!
I am still working out details of the sale, but I DO KNOW THIS....if you are reading this now, you are a friend (or a friend of a friend, and that counts, too!) I am starting this exhibition off with the idea to HONOR my friends with a better price. After my show, the paintings will head out to other shows and galleries and the price will naturally include a percentage for these business partners. Please remember that it pleases me MOST to have "pieces of my farm" in the hands of my friends :)
Time to "dibs up!"...let me know if you see one you like, and I will have the price and terms on them in a couple of weeks.... There is no obligation to buy, but you get first chance to say "no" when I post the prices...(it will be $500-$700 per painting, depending on size and framing options :)

NOW ON the WEB SITE: one by one we are adding EACH of the 365 paintings. They are almost all there, PLUS a little info about what is ahead....AND...The Story:"Last Year on the Farm", by Jeff Sparks (a great writer from Arkansas...he tells it better than I do!) PLEASE tell your friends and point them to http://www.v-vaughan.com/

Stalking Shrimp

"Stalking Shrimp".......5 x 7..........mine!
This is a little painting in my own collection. I painted it about 5 years ago when my mom took us all to Galveston. She and I sat on the porch overlooking the gulf and she watched me paint this. I gave it to her and she had it in her house until last summerwhen she had to move out to live with my sister...so mom gave this one back, and I plan to KEEP IT!...It is hard to part with your own paintings sometimes. Especially when each one I paint on location carries more memories with it than just the application of paint!
SATURDAY THIS WEEK, I will be with a gang in Rockport, TX, teaching a one-day-all-day workshop "Stalking Shrimpboats"...the day will have an architectural emphasis.
THere is room for more, so PLEASE LET ME KNOW if you'd like to caravan with us from Austin on Friday!

Looking Elsewhere

"Last Year on the Farm 06-04-2006"........available for dibs
I recently posted a BUNCH from this series of cows and egrets. Look back in Sept. and Aug. to see the others...and there are plenty more! These birds were finisshed with this place and were lookeng elsewhere for new pastures....like ME!
As I get close to "unveiling" 365 paintings of "Last Year on the Farm" , I have been spending time looking over what I have done....I am going to be adding paintings to the series until our very LAST DAY at the farm...so, yesterday I painted a SUMMER DAY>>>
WHAT a great 24 hours it has been!
Yesterday at about 9 am I began painting "Summer Day Last Year on the Farm - 24 Paintings in 24 Hours"...I am HAPPY that I was able to stick with it...a PERFECT day! (Unlike the Spring day which took 3 tries!)
It was not a "typical" Central Texas summer day, but I really enjoyed the "cool" difference. Lots of wonderful things happened during the paint-out...I will share the stories as I post the art in upcoming days....PLEASE PLAN TO COME SEE ALL 365 works...

"Last Year on the Farm - Late Spring Day 24 paintings - 9pm"
Today I am painting a "Summer 24 Paintings in 24 Hours".
I waited for a HOT, TYPICAL summer day and , well, we really have not had any! I wanted to do this "Summer 24" when the temps were over 100, but that never really happened either. Now summer will be gone next week, (by the calendar, anyway), so I'd better move on my series of seasonal "24's".
I will start at about 8 am, so, Denise, if you are watching, give me a call! :)
AND PLEASE GO SEE WHAT WE HAVE PUT ON THE WEB SITE! PLEASE MAKE YOUR DIBS NOW! THE PRICE WILL BE BETWEEN $500-700 for 90% of these paintings (the ones that are 6 x 8) and that is FRAMED...

We're Moving

"Last Year on the Farm May 5, 2006".....available for dibs
On a hot May day last year the cows made their way across the pasture, kicking up the dust and pollens. I never knew what made them all decide to head across to the other side...they probably weren't sure, either.
One thing I know, is that we are in the THICK of our move across town to Round Rock....I miss the farm in different ways every day.
NOW ON MY WEB SITE: one by one we are adding EACH of the 365 paintings. January is almost all there, PLUS a little info about what is ahead....AND...The Story:"Last Year on the Farm", by Jeff Sparks (a great writer from Arkansas...he tells it better than I do!) Hay Tips

"01-11-2007 Last Year on the Farm"
Last Jan 11 the cows were here, but this painting just shows the farm view from my studio. At sunset the shadows get long and the hay that wasn't cut at the end of summer had been trampled down, but the tips of it caught the light.
In Jan 2008 we will be long gone, but since the hay was not cut in this field this summer, it might look a lot like this.
NOW ON MY WEB SITE: one by one we are adding EACH of the 365 paintings. January is almost all there, PLUS a little info about what is ahead....AND...The Story:"Last Year on the Farm", by Jeff Sparks (a great writer from Arkansas...he tells it better than I do!) Whisperer

06-09-2006 Last Year on the Farm.....Whisperer.........available for dibs
Yesterday I painted a demo for a great group down in South Austin...What a good time we had...I think I made some new friends, and I really look forward to teaching a workshop with y'all next year...or sooner!...
I actually did a painting similar to this one, and got a good start on it. See the BLOG posting for Friday August 17 "Egret Breath" to see my reference. I'll finish it this week and post it up FOR SALE, not dibs, since it is not actually a part of the Farm Show. It is a BIGGIE (for me) 20 x 20. Since many of my Blog Friends live outside of Texas (bless their poor hearts), I want y'all to be the first to see it!...soon!...maybe tomorrow?

In "V" Formation

"Last Year on the Farm 04-27-2006" ..........................available for dibs
I am getting a lot of nice comments about the recent posts of cows and egrets. THANK YOU!!! So, I have dug back to find a few that I might not have posted before! I remember painting this on an April day, not long after hearing the sandhill cranes flying high above, on their way back up north. Twice a year they fly over, and on our quiet farm you can hear them- so high above, they are hard to find with the eye. Watching these cows move through the pasture, it looked like they were assuming the same "V" formation.
NOW ON MY WEB SITE: one by one we are adding EACH of the 365 paintings. January is almost all there, PLUS a little info about what is ahead....AND...

Looking Ahead : Cow with Egrets

"06-04-2006 Last Year on the Farm" .........available for "dibs"
This cow grazed on the move, never lifting her head, I reckoned that the egrets were her eyes. Nestled close to her face, they would alert her if she had reason to look up.
I guess "dibs" is not just a southern term, because many of you have responded from other parts of the country! I really appreciate the response! Many of the recent posts have gotten "dibs" on them.
I did not say much about it when I started posting these last year. So now, since I will offer them for sale real soon, I invite you all to LOOK BACK through the archives and see if there is any you might like! ESPECIALLY those of you who frequently comment. You have been "with me" through this, and I would like you to have first shot at one you like when I "release" them.
See the list of months at right, scroll through, and if you see a farm painting you might like to have, LET ME KNOW! You could have "First Dibs" ! Remember that you are not obligated to purchase, but will have the first option.
The show opens in October. You are invited to my reception at the Farm on Oct 20.

In Line

"05-01-2006 Last Year on the Farm" .........available for dibs

These egrets seemed to line up to have their shot at the next bug snack! Below I explain how you can "line up" to purchase any of these paintings of my "Last Year on the Farm"...There is a lot to read, today, so please e-mail me if you have questions...

In October I will release this farm and all 365 farm paintings. This is becoming very symbolic for me in so many ways. I will send out e-mail announcements and directions. If you would like a PAPER invitation, those will be sent out in a few weeks. E-mail me your address to let me know if you want these announcements.

My web site will have ALL 365 paintings under the "Farm" link soon. KEEP WATCHING! If you want one of these Farm Paintings, You can put your "dibs" on ANYTHING right now! Just page back through the archives, let me know which one(s) you want to consider, and I will put your name on back. You will have the OPTION to buy it in October. Here's how the release will happen...

My kids will select a few ....then, whoever is next in line for a painting will have the OPTION to buy it. If they have their name on a couple, they will likely take their favorite and "pass" on the rest. So get your dibs in NOW !
Just having your name on the list for a painting does not COMMIT you to having to buy it. That's why I encourage you to put dibs on a FEW!!!
I will be happy to keep them all if EVERYONE "passes". My heart is in these paintings...deeply!
BUT,...if all the paintings are sold, then I will buy a new farm! That's good , too :)

Gathering

07-22-2006 Last Year on the Farm oil available for dibs

I guess they were wondering what I was doing. They gathered around and got closer and closer. The cloud in the background was gathering at the same time, so I had to hurry with this painting it blew up (it was just a lot of bark...no bite, though) ...

Let me know if you are interested in this one. I will be painting a big one from this little study.

All the farm paintings go on sale on Oct 20 at my big Farm Show...please let me know if you can come!

Walking to Warm

"01-05-2007 Last Year on the Farm"....available for dibs
It was the sever cold tht hastenedthe selling off of the cattle last January. It was inevitable, but I had hope to paint them till the end of our time here.
The cold usually warms up by noon and the cows stay out to warm themselves in the sun. But this cold snap was so hard and so long that, staying out never made them warm. Thye should have gone into the covered places, but didn't and a few died. The rest ere sold before they died, too.

Oak and Pecan

"02-07-2007 Last Year on the Farm"
Without cows last Feb. I focused on the contrast of trees below my studio. An oak stands in front of a pecan. Pa planted a row of pecans along and above the tank but I have photos that were taken before they were there! I am particularly fond of pecans. They "read" the seasons better than any tree I know. My next farm will have a bunch of them! :)
All 365 of the "Last Year on the Farm" paintings will be on display at our farm in the month of October. YOU ARE INVITED TO A SPECIAL RECEPTION on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007, from 10 am till 8 pm.
